Addressing the Mental Health Crisis: Supporting Burned-Out Health Care Workers
A federal survey released by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reveals that the COVID-19 pandemic has worsened burnout and mental distress among healthcare workers in the United States. The survey found that nearly half of healthcare workers felt burned out in 2022, marking a 14% increase since 2018. Rising incidents of harassment and declining trust in management were also reported. The CDC warns that these conditions threaten the sustainability of the healthcare workforce and calls for immediate action to improve working conditions and support the mental well-being of healthcare workers. Suggestions include systemic changes such as supportive management, preventing harassment, and providing adequate time to complete tasks, as well as reducing stigma and increasing access to mental and behavioral healthcare.
