Gauff crowns Cincinnati Open triumph, calls it among her best

Coco Gauff won her first title of 2026 at the Cincinnati Open, defeating fellow American Jessica Pegula 6-2, 6-4 in the final to claim her 12th career title. It marked the first all-American women’s singles final there in 56 years, and Gauff dominated most of the event with five straight-set wins (one three-setter vs. Samsonova). She said Cincinnati, along with the Wuhan Open, is among the best tournaments she’s played. The win leaves her as the fourth seed at the US Open and preserves her chances to rise to world No. 1 with a deep run in New York.

Pegula won only about 30% of return points and only 10 points against Eala’s serve in the second and third sets combined, compared with 11 in the first. The crowd backed Eala, and both players head to the Canadian Open, with Eala facing Alycia Parks and Pegula facing Magdalena Frech.

WTA Approves Pathway to Pay Equity in Tennis.

The WTA Tour has approved a plan to achieve pay equity at its biggest tournaments, but it won’t be fully implemented until 2033. Organizers of the 1000-level and 500-level tournaments have committed to pay equity as well, with all events featuring both men and women at those two levels paying prize money equal to that on the men’s tour beginning in 2027. By 2033, all events at those two levels will offer the same prize money. The phased-in approach is essential for raising the additional revenue to fund the pay increases, but some players do not understand the slow pace of change.
