Alaska Airlines Pilot Indicted for Attempting to Disable Plane Engines Mid-Flight
An off-duty Alaska Airlines pilot, Joseph David Emerson, who attempted to shut down an airplane's engines mid-flight during a drug-induced mental health crisis, has been indicted by a Multnomah County grand jury on 83 misdemeanor counts of recklessly endangering another person and a single count of endangering an aircraft. The grand jury decided not to charge him with 83 counts of attempted murder. Emerson's defense team argues that he never intended to harm anyone and was acting in a single-minded effort to wake up from what he believed was a dream. The incident has drawn national attention, and Emerson has also been charged with a federal crime by the U.S. Department of Justice.
