23andMe Data Breach: Hackers Compromise Personal Information of 6.9 Million Users

Genetic testing company 23andMe has confirmed that hackers accessed the personal data of approximately 6.9 million users, which accounts for about half of its customer base. The breach occurred because customers had used the same username and password on 23andMe as they had on other compromised websites. The hackers were able to access DNA profile files and Family Tree profile information. 23andMe stated that there was no indication of a breach within its systems and has taken steps to enhance data protection, including password resets and two-step verification. This incident follows the appearance of some 23andMe customers' profile information on a dark web forum in October.
