FBI warns of security risks with public phone charging stations

The FBI has warned the public against using free charging stations in public places such as airports, hotels, and shopping centers, as "bad actors" can use public USB ports to introduce malware and monitoring software onto devices. Criminals can install malware through a "dirty" USB port and lock a device or export personal data and passwords, which can then be used to access online accounts or sold to other bad actors. The FCC advises using an AC power outlet instead and bringing a car charger and personal USB cable when traveling.
