The piece argues that many so‑called public EV chargers at car dealers aren’t truly public—access is limited, hours aren’t consistent, and pricing is opaque or punitive (cited examples include $15/kWh at a Hyundai dealer and a $671.60 bill from an MES station). It urges stronger regulation and clearer disclosure, plus concrete rules (visible price signage, guaranteed public access, and clawback mechanisms for subsidies) to ensure chargers funded with public money actually serve drivers. It also calls for industry standards like prioritized public use, enforceable pricing, regular audits, and penalties for noncompliance.
Chronic fuel shortages and low-quality gasoline in Bolivia are pushing more people to buy electric vehicles, as locals like Simón Huanca use EVs to ferry family and goods in El Alto while charging infrastructure expands amid protests over fuel subsidies and price volatility.

It also offers practical advice for the trip itself, such as managing speed, packing wisely, and using charging stops efficiently. With improved charging infrastructure and faster-charging vehicles, long EV road trips are becoming more feasible.
Charging an electric vehicle at home using a Level 1 charger can be convenient but slow, as experienced with the Hyundai Ioniq 6, which only gained 6% battery overnight. For faster charging, a Level 2 charger or public charging stations are recommended, though they come with additional costs and considerations.
Maine towns are opening warming shelters and charging stations in response to widespread power outages, with locations including Biddeford Middle School, Old Orchard Beach, Portland's East End Community School, Saco Community Center, and Wells Police Department, providing warm places to visit, charge electronics, and sleep overnight, with additional items recommended for those planning to stay overnight.
Wisconsin Governor Tony Evers signed bills to facilitate the development of an electric vehicle charging network across the state, unlocking nearly $80 million in federal construction aid and making it easier for businesses to operate charging stations. The funding aims to support the creation of 65 high-speed charging stations in key corridors, allowing electric vehicle drivers to travel about 85% of the state highway system without being more than 25 miles away from a charger. The move aligns with President Joe Biden's goal to build a national network of 500,000 publicly available chargers by 2030 and is seen as a step towards reducing reliance on gasoline-powered vehicles.
Barstool Sports' PFT Commenter shared a disastrous experience with his electric car during a road trip to the NFL Combine, where the vehicle's battery life drastically decreased, causing him to scramble for a charging station and arrive late. Frustrated, he declared that he's now considering driving diesel instead of using electric cars, despite his initial intention to save the environment.
Tesla has opened up its Supercharger network in North America to drivers of Ford and General Motors electric vehicles, marking a strategic shift for the company. This move is expected to yield significant financial benefits for Tesla, including from environmental credits and charging fees, potentially amounting to $6 billion to $12 billion a year by 2030. While Tesla may lose some customers to other brands, its loyal customer base and access to federal funding under President Biden's Inflation Reduction Act are seen as mitigating factors. The partnership with Ford and GM reflects a broader trend in the electric vehicle industry towards interoperability and collaboration.
A TikTok travel guru warned against using airport charging stations due to the cybersecurity risk of "juice jacking," where cybercriminals can steal data through USB ports. The FBI has issued a warning about this threat, and the FCC explained how hackers can load malware onto public charging stations to access electronic devices. The recommendation is to use battery packs or power-only USB cables instead. While some viewers appreciated the advice, others expressed frustration over the inconvenience of this security risk.
President Biden vetoed a Republican-led effort to block the administration's plan to invest $7.5 billion in building electric vehicle charging stations, arguing that it would harm domestic manufacturing and the clean energy transition. The move reflects a growing political divide over electric vehicles, with the Biden administration promoting them as crucial in the fight against global warming, while Republicans, including former President Trump, criticize them as unreliable and ceding America's auto manufacturing to China.
The Biden administration has issued guidance making much of the country eligible for tax credits aimed at offsetting the cost of installing electric vehicle chargers, covering areas outside major cities. This initiative is part of the administration's goal to have electric vehicles account for half of new car sales by 2030, and the tax credits can be claimed for charging equipment installed for public or private use at homes or on business properties. The move aims to make it more affordable for Americans to deploy electric vehicle chargers.
