The Unit 3 reactor at Georgia Power's Vogtle nuclear power plant in Georgia has started commercial operation, marking the first new nuclear reactor to deliver power to the US electric grid in nearly seven years. The Westinghouse AP1000 reactor is generating approximately 1,110 megawatts of energy, enough to power around 500,000 homes and businesses. The construction of the Vogtle reactors has faced significant delays and cost overruns, but the milestone is seen as a significant achievement for the US nuclear energy industry. Unit 4 of the Vogtle Plant is expected to go into service in late 2023 or early 2024.
