Massachusetts Takes Bold Steps Towards a Sustainable Energy Future

The Massachusetts Department of Public Utilities has issued an order outlining a strategy to transition the state away from natural gas and towards cleaner energy sources. The order prohibits utilities from charging customers for new gas infrastructure if viable non-gas alternatives exist, changes the cost recovery process to incentivize the shift to electric heat, and prohibits the use of ratepayer money to promote natural gas. Gas utilities will be required to submit "Climate Compliance" plans every five years to ensure emissions reduction and electrification efforts. The order aims to minimize investment in gas infrastructure and achieve decarbonization in residential, commercial, and industrial sectors. The state plans to address affordability concerns in a separate proceeding.
