Renewable Energy Overtakes Coal in US for the First Time in History

Renewable energy surpassed coal as the largest source of electricity generation in the US in 2022, with wind and solar leading the increase in renewable electricity generation. However, natural gas remained the largest source of electricity generation in the country, and its production increased from 37% in 2021 to 39% in 2022. Texas led in wind energy production, while California led in solar energy production. The decline in coal-generated electricity is predicted to continue this year, while solar-generated electricity is expected to increase in 2023.
