"Solar Power Shines Bright in Europe's Heatwave Energy Crisis"

Solar power generation in southern Europe has played a crucial role in preventing energy shortages during recent heatwaves, as the increased demand for air conditioning coincides with the strongest solar radiation. Spain and Greece have significantly increased their solar capacity, with solar energy providing almost 24% of Spain's electricity in July. Solar power has helped meet peak demand in Sicily and Greece, and even in cooler countries like Belgium, solar energy has covered more than 100% of the extra energy needed during midday spikes in power demand. However, solar alone cannot sustain grids under severe strain, as evidenced by power and water supply cuts in Catania and damage to the electricity grid in Athens due to wildfires. Despite the positive impact of solar, Europe's energy systems are not designed to cope with the increasing frequency and severity of heatwaves caused by climate change, highlighting the need for investments in energy grids and the coupling of solar with energy storage.
