Unlocking the Untapped Potential: Offshore Wind Energy in the US

The US has significant untapped potential for offshore wind energy, with the capacity to generate up to a quarter of the nation's electricity by 2050, according to a report by the University of California, Berkeley. However, the US currently has very little offshore wind capacity installed and faces political and financial challenges. To meet climate goals and increasing electricity demand, the US needs to add 27 gigawatts of offshore wind and 85 gigawatts of land-based wind and solar each year between 2035 and 2050. While there are obstacles to overcome, such as opposition from coastal communities and rising project costs, offshore wind has the potential to diversify the clean energy supply and complement land-based renewables.
