China's coal power expansion threatens global climate goals.

Global efforts to phase out coal continued in 2022, except in China where new coal production capacity offset the gains in the rest of the world, according to a report by Global Energy Monitor. The US saw the largest decline in coal-fired power generation, while the EU recorded a decrease of only 2.2 GW. China alone now accounts for 68% of coal-related projects under development worldwide, and 72% of those are in the pipeline. Despite advances, the pace of the global coal phase-out remains incompatible with the goal of the Paris Agreement.
