Jury holds McDonald's liable for hot chicken nugget burns.

A jury has found McDonald's and its franchise operator, Upchurch Foods, liable for a 4-year-old girl's second-degree burns caused by an overheated Chicken McNugget that fell on her lap in 2019. The jury rejected the argument that the product was defective but found both defendants liable for negligence and failure to warn customers about the risk. A second jury will determine the amount of damages to be paid. McDonald's argued that the food had to be hot to avoid salmonella poisoning, but the plaintiffs argued that the temperature was much hotter than necessary and that the company failed to provide instructions for safe handling of the food.
