Torch-fueled burns surge among Portland smokers of fentanyl, prompting public-health push
A wave of deep, tissue-damaging burns among people who smoke drugs like fentanyl is linked to high-heat butane torches. A JAMA Internal Medicine study found smokable-drug users (about 15% of Oregon Health Plan members) account for more than half of Medicaid burn-related hospitalizations and ED visits, indicating a disproportionate risk. Experts urge policy changes to curb torch access and remove flame-lock features, noting these injuries are costly, often require multiple surgeries, and complicate recovery for patients with addiction and other challenges.
