"Americans' Retirement 'Magic Number' Soars to Record High Amid Savings Concerns"

A new study by Northwestern Mutual reveals that the "magic number" Americans believe they need to retire comfortably has hit an all-time high of $1.46 million, a 15% increase from 2023 and a 53% surge over the past five years. Despite this, Americans are not saving more, with the average retirement savings falling to $88,400. Stubbornly high inflation has forced many to dip into their retirement savings, with nearly 7 in 10 respondents reporting reduced contributions due to higher prices for everyday goods. Inflation continues to strain household budgets, particularly impacting low-income Americans, with prices up 18.49% since January 2021.
