OpenAI seeks dismissal of Apple trade secrets suit, calling claims meritless

OpenAI has asked a federal judge to dismiss Apple’s landmark trade-secrets lawsuit, arguing that the allegations are meritless and that Apple mischaracterizes employees’ actions as theft and generic product information as trade secrets. The filing notes Apple failed to take reasonable steps to keep such information secret and frames the case as an employer-talent issue rather than a theft dispute. It references Apple’s July filing and a blog response calling the suit “careless, aggressive, and oddly personal,” and cites Chang Liu— a former Apple employee now at OpenAI— as having helped colleagues rather than stealing confidential files. A hearing on the motion is scheduled for October 1, and Apple has also sought a preliminary injunction to prevent OpenAI and the named employees from accessing or disclosing alleged confidential information during the proceedings.
