Newly unsealed court documents reveal that in 2016, Facebook launched a secret project called "Project Ghostbusters" to intercept and decrypt the network traffic between users of Snapchat, YouTube, and Amazon, in an effort to gain a competitive advantage. The project, part of Facebook's In-App Action Panel program, aimed to understand user behavior and help Facebook compete with its rivals. Facebook engineers proposed using Onavo, a VPN-like service, to bypass encryption and intercept traffic for specific subdomains. The revelation is part of a class action lawsuit against Meta, Facebook's parent company, alleging deceptive data collection and exploitation of user data to identify and compete against competitors.
