Instagram Debuts Instants: Ephemeral, Uneditable Photos for Close Friends

Instagram is rolling out Instants, a new ephemeral photo format that users can share only with close friends or mutual followers. Instants disappear for viewers after they see them (and within 24 hours), can’t be edited, and can’t be captured via screenshots or screen recordings. Creators can archive Instants for up to a year, undo sending, or resharing as an Instagram Story recap. The feature is available globally in the Instagram DM inbox and via a separate app currently in testing in select countries; early tests in Italy and Spain were followed by broader rollout. Instagram says Instants are meant for more casual, authentic moments, with interactions occurring through DMs.

Teens’ Experiences Differ Across TikTok, Instagram and Snapchat, Pew Study Finds

Pew Research Center surveyed 1,458 U.S. teens aged 13–17 and their parents (Sept. 25–Oct. 9, 2025) to compare experiences on TikTok, Instagram and Snapchat. Entertainment is the top reason for using all three, with TikTok showing the strongest pull; Snapchat emphasizes keeping up with friends, while TikTok/Instagram lead for product reviews and news. Snapchat users DM more (about 57% daily) and post more often (roughly 30% daily) than the other platforms, and about 30% of TikTok users say they spend too much time on the app. Most teens report a mostly positive overall experience, though TikTok users report stronger negative effects on sleep and productivity, while Snapchat is seen as helping friendships. About a quarter of parents say social media hurts their teen’s mental health, vs 8% who say it helps. Harassment is common across platforms, with about 75% of users viewing it as a problem and roughly 30% of Snapchat users experiencing at least one type of harassment. Self-esteem effects are mixed, but most teens say what they see on these platforms does not change their self-esteem.

The company is prioritizing monetizable markets, Snapchat+ subscriptions, and higher-margin ads, with Q1 revenue guided to about $1.529 billion and adjusted EBITDA of around $233 million. Departing U.S. employees will receive severance and benefits, with transitions support provided.

Dolby presses Snap over AV1 patents, challenging the codec’s royalty-free pledge

Dolby filed a Delaware lawsuit against Snapchat accusing Snap of infringing several Dolby patents tied to AV1/HEVC video tech, arguing that AV1’s royalty-free promise is not guaranteed and seeking a jury trial, FRAND licensing clarity, and an injunction. The case, alongside other AV1/IP actions (including InterDigital), tests whether AV1 truly carries no licensing obligations and could shape the adoption and licensing dynamics of the codec.

Chicago Jury Acquits Man in Alleged Murder-for-Hire Plot Targeting Border Patrol Chief

A Chicago jury found Juan Espinoza Martinez not guilty of a murder-for-hire charge after prosecutors alleged he posted a $10,000 bounty to kill border patrol official Gregory Bovino on Snapchat; defense argued the messages were gossip with no intent to act. The acquittal, amid a broader wave of failed immigration-enforcement prosecutions, highlighted questions about the government’s case and the crackdown.
