Genetic testing company 23andMe has provided more details about a data breach it reported in October, revealing that the personal data of approximately 5.5 million users who had opted into its DNA Relatives service was stolen by attackers. In addition, information from an additional 1.4 million DNA Relatives users was accessed. The company had previously stated that only 14,000 user accounts were compromised, but this number did not account for the data scraped from DNA Relatives. The breach has raised concerns about the security of personal data and the need for standardized disclosure and reporting laws.
