Meta blocks camera access on tampered Glasses to curb covert filming

Meta rolled out an update for its Glasses that disables the device’s camera when the LED indicator is covered or destroyed, after reports of people recording others without consent. Meta estimates fewer than 0.1% of all Glasses have been tampered with; with about 7 million sold in 2025, the offenders are in the thousands. Affected users are left with a non-camera pair of glasses, effectively turning them into Bluetooth headphones. Meta is launching a public awareness campaign and exploring assistive-device classification, including a donation of 130,000 glasses to legally blind US veterans to highlight potential benefits alongside privacy safeguards.
