"Southwest Airlines Slapped with $140M Fine for Holiday Travel Chaos"

Southwest Airlines has been hit with a record-breaking $140 million fine by the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) for violating consumer protection laws during last year's holiday travel debacle, which saw thousands of flights canceled. The fine, 30 times larger than any previous penalty for consumer protection violations, comes after an investigation revealed that Southwest failed to adequately staff its customer service department, provide timely flight updates, and promptly reimburse affected passengers. The majority of the fine will go to passengers who were adversely affected, and Southwest will also issue over $600 million in refunds and reimbursements. The airline will pay out a total of more than $750 million for the meltdown, which was partly attributed to issues with its computer technology. Southwest and other airlines have since made changes to their customer service systems and will establish a compensation system for future passengers experiencing major delays or cancellations.
