Global South Vows to Never Again Lack Vaccines as Pandemic Rages

Researchers across Africa, Asia, and South America, in collaboration with the World Health Organization, have launched an initiative to develop their ability to produce messenger RNA (mRNA) vaccines, aiming to address the vaccine inequity that left the global south without access to COVID-19 vaccines. The initiative, called the mRNA vaccine technology transfer hub, involves companies and institutes in 15 middle-income countries. The goal is to not only produce mRNA vaccines against COVID-19 but also develop vaccines for other diseases. The project faces challenges such as funding, regulatory agency strengthening, and market realities, but it aims to create a more equitable world for vaccines by empowering local production in the global south.
