Drug shortages in the UK have nearly doubled since the start of 2022, affecting medications for cancer, epilepsy, diabetes, and menopause. Global supply chain issues, compounded by Brexit and the war in Ukraine, have led to the country being worse off than its neighbors. The British Generic Manufacturers Association reported that around 100 drugs were on a shortage list in mid-December 2023. Pharmacists are struggling to secure supplies, leading to disruptions and delays in patient treatment. The Department of Health and Social Care cited spikes in demand, manufacturing problems, and other issues as factors affecting drug supply, and stated that they are working to prevent and resolve shortages.
