Scientists have developed gene-editing tools to control and possibly eradicate disease-carrying mosquitoes such as Aedes aegypti, which spread dengue, malaria, and other diseases. Using bioengineering, companies like Oxitec have created male mosquitoes that produce non-surviving female offspring, reducing mosquito populations by over 90% in some areas. Research organizations are also focusing on using gene editing to combat malaria-transmitting mosquitoes, with hopes of drastically reducing disease spread. Despite public resistance and environmental concerns, these technologies are being tested for safety and effectiveness, and may become available commercially in the U.S. within the next two years.
