Blood Condition Linked to Alzheimer's Protection: New Biomarker Discovered

A common blood condition called clonal hematopoiesis of indeterminate potential (CHIP), which is associated with an increased risk of various diseases, unexpectedly appears to lower the risk of Alzheimer's disease. Researchers at Stanford University found that individuals with the blood mutation had a 30-50% lower risk of Alzheimer's compared to those without the mutation. The study suggests that bone marrow-derived cells with the CHIP mutation may outcompete faulty brain-derived microglia, potentially playing a protective role against Alzheimer's. However, further research is needed to fully understand the mechanisms behind this protection.
