Rapid Rise: Obesity-Linked Heart Deaths Triple in 20 Years

Obesity-related heart disease deaths in the United States have tripled between 1999 and 2020, with Black Americans, particularly Black women, being disproportionately affected. A study by the American Heart Association found that the number of deaths from obesity-related heart disease has risen due to the increasing burden of obesity. Black individuals had the highest number of deaths compared to other racial and ethnic groups, with Black women being most affected. The study also revealed that Black adults living in cities had higher rates of obesity-related heart disease deaths, while rural residents of other races showed higher mortality rates. Health inequalities and limited access to healthcare were cited as potential factors contributing to the disparities.
