Study Confirms Safety and Effectiveness of Telehealth Abortion

A new study published in Nature Medicine confirms that telehealth-prescribed mifepristone for medication abortions is as safe and effective as in-person care, with 99.8% of cases not resulting in serious adverse events and 97.7% successfully terminating pregnancy. The study's findings contradict anti-abortion arguments against mifepristone, and come ahead of the U.S. Supreme Court's scheduled hearing on the drug's access. The FDA's temporary allowance of telehealth access to mifepristone during the COVID-19 pandemic was made permanent in 2021, but faced bans in some states. The study's data, collected from California Home Abortion by Telehealth, shows consistent effectiveness across demographics and minimal hospital admissions following pill use.
