The Impact of Prenatal Discrimination on Infant Brain Connectivity

Discrimination and acculturation experiences during pregnancy have been found to impact the brain development of infants, separate from general stress or depression effects. Using MRI, researchers analyzed brain connectivity in infants of pregnant participants who experienced discrimination. They found weaker connectivity between the amygdala and prefrontal cortex, areas linked to emotional processing and higher-order functioning. This study highlights the specific influence of prenatal discrimination on brain development and calls for further research to understand the underlying mechanisms and effects on different populations.
