Accidental Discovery Unveils Groundbreaking Solution to Plastic Pollution

Researchers at the University of Cambridge accidentally discovered a new material, similar to plastic but made from plant proteins, while studying protein formation and interactions. The material, dubbed "vegan spider silk," is water-resistant, durable, and fully compostable. It has the potential to address the global problem of single-use plastic pollution. In collaboration with the spinout company Xampla, the material is set to be commercialized, with vegan spider silk single-use sachets and capsules expected to be available by the end of 2023. This discovery could significantly reduce carbon pollution and offer a sustainable alternative to traditional plastics.
