Modern Life Outpaces Our Minds, Researchers Say

A Behavioral Sciences study from Singapore argues that rapid modern life—large online networks, constant social comparison, and multiple overlapping pressures—creates an evolutionary mismatch between our biology and the environments we now inhabit. The Social Evolutionary Mismatch and Competition Hypothesis (SEMCH) links this mismatch to physical and mental health problems like obesity and anxiety, driven by heightened competition and environmental cues beyond what our brains evolved to handle. The researchers suggest designing cities and digital spaces to reduce perceived competition and align better with evolved human needs, and call for real‑world tests of these interventions.
