British American Tobacco fined over $600 million for violating North Korea sanctions.

British American Tobacco subsidiary has agreed to pay over $600 million for violating US sanctions against North Korea and conspiring to commit bank fraud by selling tobacco products to the country between 2007 and 2017. The settlement is the largest North Korean sanctions penalty in the history of the Department of Justice. North Korea is believed to use a substantial portion of the profit from counterfeit cigarettes to fund its military and weapons of mass destruction program. The company has entered into a deferred prosecution agreement with DOJ and a plea agreement with its Singaporean subsidiary.
