Father on Trial for Murdering Starved and Beaten 8-Year-Old Son

An eight-year-old boy in Illinois was found beaten and starved to death in his home, with a sign on his bedroom door instructing not to give him any food. Navin Jones weighed just 30 pounds and was discovered in a locked room covered in urine and feces, with signs of physical abuse. His mother has already pleaded guilty to the crime, while his father faces up to life in prison if convicted of first-degree murder. The boy's room was described as deplorable, while the rest of the home was well furnished. The grandmother, who had been the boy's legal guardian, had tried to regain custody but her efforts were unsuccessful. The Illinois Department of Children and Family Services had investigated previous allegations but deemed them unfounded.
