"Flagstaff Mother Receives Life Sentence for Starvation Death of Son"

Elizabeth Archibeque, an Arizona woman, has been sentenced to life in prison without parole for the starvation death of her 6-year-old son. Witnesses described the horrific conditions in which the boy and his brother were kept, including a tiny closet that smelled of urine and where they were denied food. Archibeque pleaded guilty to first-degree murder and child abuse in the 2020 death of her son, Deshaun Martinez. While expressing remorse, the judge deemed her behavior "heinous, cruel, and depraved" and sentenced her to life imprisonment. The boy's father and grandmother, who are also charged in the case, have pleaded not guilty and are awaiting separate trials.
