Mother of 6-Year-Old Shooter Charged with Neglect and Indicted by Grand Jury.

The mother of a 6-year-old who shot and injured his first-grade teacher at an elementary school in Newport News, Virginia, has been indicted by a grand jury on charges of child neglect and child endangerment involving a loaded weapon. The boy had brought a handgun to school and shot his teacher in January. The child has not been charged, and the prosecutor said he would most likely not understand the legal system. The prosecutor is also asking the court to create a special grand jury to investigate possible security issues at the school, and more indictments might be coming.
