"Pentagon Tracks Unidentified Hobby Balloon Over Western US"
TL;DR
The Pentagon confirmed that a high altitude balloon detected over the US is likely a hobby craft, a year after a Chinese spy balloon caused controversy. NORAD monitored the balloon until it left US airspace and determined it posed no threat. This comes after a Chinese spy craft was shot down last year, with intelligence agencies concluding it was used for spying. The latest balloon was identified as belonging to an amateur balloonist and was not from China, according to defense officials.
