The Biden administration approved the Willow oil project in Arctic Alaska, which is estimated to produce 576 million barrels of oil over 30 years. The project, controlled by ConocoPhillips, is expected to cost $8 billion to $10 billion and will have a total footprint of 499 acres, including hundreds of miles of roads and pipelines, airstrips, a gravel mine, and a new processing facility. Burning Willow’s oil would put an estimated 239 million metric tons of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere during the project’s 30-year lifetime. The decision has been met with opposition from climate activists who argue that it undermines US efforts to phase out fossil fuels worldwide.
