EPA proposes historic limits on power plant emissions to achieve Biden's climate goals.

The Biden administration has proposed a new climate rule that would require fossil fuel power plants to reduce their greenhouse gas pollution by 90% between 2035 and 2040 or shut down. The draft power plant rule from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) would require steep pollution cuts from plants burning coal or natural gas, which together provide the lion’s share of the nation’s electricity. The rule allows plants that agree to close in the first half of the 2030s to avoid most or all of the pollution-reduction mandates. The new rule faces legal challenges from GOP-led states that embrace fossil fuels and from the conservative Supreme Court that curbed EPA’s authority over the power sector less than a year ago.
