Minnesota Nuclear Plant Shut Down After Second Radioactive Water Leak

The Twin Cities are preparing for the possibility of contaminated water following multiple leaks at a nuclear plant on the Mississippi River. The city of Minneapolis is partnering with the Minnesota Department of Health to assess the situation and developing plans to ensure the water they deliver is not impacted in the event contamination reaches the river. The Mississippi is the source of drinking water for Minneapolis, St. Paul, and surrounding suburbs. Xcel Energy is powering down the Monticello Nuclear Generating Plant as the company works to address a leak of water containing tritium at the plant. All agencies have said there is no risk to the public.
