New Mexico's largest wildfire devastates a way of life.

The Hermits Peak/Calf Canyon wildfire in New Mexico destroyed millions of acres of forestland and over 220 structures, displacing nearly 100 Mora County residents, some of whom were descendants of Indigenous people who lived off the land and settlers who put down roots in northern New Mexico in the 1800s. The tens of millions of dead trees could topple over and reburn, posing a hazard near roads. The fire caused an estimated $29 million in damage to Mora County and $189 million statewide. The Hermits Peak Fire Assistance Act provides $2.5 billion in compensation to New Mexicans and tribal nations affected by the fire.
