UN sets goal to reduce plastic pollution by 80% by 2040.
The UN Environment Programme (Unep) has released a report stating that global plastic pollution could be reduced by 80% by 2040 through practical and affordable changes, such as eliminating unnecessary plastics, increasing reuse, boosting recycling, and replacing plastics with greener alternatives. The report estimates that the shift would bring benefits worth trillions of dollars by reducing the damage caused by plastics to health, the climate, and the environment. The increased reuse of plastics could reduce 30% of plastic pollution by 2040, while more recycling would cut pollution by a further 20%. The report also estimated that the shift could lead to a net increase of 700,000 jobs by 2040, mostly in low-income countries.
