The Pacific Fishery Management Council has canceled the commercial and most of the recreational fishing season for Chinook salmon along the West Coast due to depleted stocks caused by damming, overfishing, habitat destruction, and climate change. The closure will affect tens of thousands of jobs, but many fishers support the decision to ensure healthy stocks in the future. California Governor Gavin Newsom has requested a Federal Fishery Disaster Declaration to support the salmon fishing industry. The National Marine Fisheries Service will approve the recommendation by May 16.
