Supreme Court urged to maintain restrictions on mifepristone by anti-abortion groups and drug companies.

An anti-abortion group, the Alliance Defending Freedom, has asked the Supreme Court to keep restrictions on the abortion pill mifepristone in place while the legal battle over the medication's status plays out. Mifepristone, used in combination with a drug called misoprostol, is the most common method to terminate a pregnancy in the U.S., accounting for about half of all abortions. The FDA approved mifepristone in 2000, but a federal judge suspended its approval earlier this month. The Supreme Court, which has a 6-3 conservative majority, could decide at any time how to proceed with the case.
