As Title 42, the pandemic-era border policy, expires, the US is bracing for a surge of asylum seekers at the southern border. The Biden administration has dispatched 1500 troops to help border agents cope with the imminent chaos, even as it vows to enforce another rule known as Title 8, which would penalize anyone who attempts to cross illegally or fails to apply for asylum in another country before arriving at America's gates. El Paso, Brownsville, and Laredo have already declared a state of emergency, with El Paso Mayor Oscar Leeser warning that 15,000 are primed to try to enter his city alone once the policy is lifted.
