Family of Tyre Nichols files $550 million lawsuit against Memphis and police officers.

The family of Tyre Nichols, a 29-year-old Black man who died in January after being beaten by police during a traffic stop, has filed a $550 million federal lawsuit against the city of Memphis. The family hopes the lawsuit and the massive award they are seeking will send a message to Memphis and other U.S. cities that continued brutalization of Black men will be expensive, in hopes of forcing a change in the way police officers are hired and trained. The specific number of $550 million was chosen as a reference to 55 years since civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated, also in Memphis.
