Transgender woman sues Maryland corrections system over assault and hormone denial in men's jail.
A transgender woman, Chelsea Gilliam, has sued Maryland's corrections department for housing her with male inmates, where she was sexually assaulted and denied hormone treatment. The lawsuit alleges that the department violated Gilliam's constitutional rights by leaving her unprotected from assault, harassed, held in solitary confinement, and denied necessary medical treatment. The suit also alleges that Gilliam suffered harm, including exacerbation of her gender dysphoria and physical and emotional distress. The lawsuit asks for punitive and compensatory damages and to order the department to give inmates with gender dysphoria adequate and necessary medical care.
