CNN Poll Signals Growing Democratic Socialist Wing Within the Party

A CNN poll conducted by SSRS finds that roughly one in three Democrats and Democratic-leaning adults identify as democratic socialists. The group tends to be younger, whiter, less educated, and earn under $100,000, with higher motivation to vote. They generally view the Democratic Party and its leaders more favorably, and are more likely to endorse moving the party to the left on policy, though most still back Democratic congressional candidates. The trend is evident in several recent nominations and could expand beyond traditional Democratic strongholds; primaries in the coming weeks will test that possibility. The survey sampled 1,225 U.S. adults with a margin of error ±3.2 percentage points.
