DOJ Intervenes in Florida Voting Dispute

The Department of Justice has filed a "statement of interest" in a lawsuit challenging a voter registration provision in Florida that requires some individuals to physically sign their name with a pen, known as the "wet signature" requirement. The lawsuit was filed by voting advocacy group Vote.org, the Florida state branch of the NAACP, and two other organizations. The DOJ's brief challenges arguments made by the Republican National Committee and local election supervisors, including whether private groups have the standing to question if a state law violates federal civil rights and voting laws. This is the second time in recent weeks that the Biden administration has intervened in lawsuits challenging Florida laws.
