Florida GOP Lawmaker Apologizes for Transphobic Comments

Florida state legislator Webster Barnaby, a conservative Christian, apologized after calling transgender people "demons" and "mutants" during a legislative hearing on a bill that would criminalize using restrooms that match people's gender identities. Florida has recently enacted laws that ban classroom discussion of sexual orientation and gender identity in primary schools, with related measures under consideration during the current legislative session. The state also joined more than a half-dozen other states in restricting transition-related medical care for minors.
