GOP probes NJ after 6,600 noncitizen voter sign-ups tied to software glitch

House Republicans Jim Jordan and Bryan Steil are demanding documents from New Jersey after Gov. Mikie Sherrill disclosed that about 6,600 noncitizens were added to voter rolls in 2023–24 due to a Motor Vehicle Commission software error, with roughly 400 having voted. The letter seeks information on New Jersey’s compliance with federal voting laws (HAVA, NVRA, CRA) and evidence of how rolls are vetted, with a deadline of Aug. 17. IDEMIA, the software vendor, disputes the cause, but Republicans argue the state’s handling raises questions about citizenship verification. There is currently no evidence that noncitizens have influenced federal elections.
