Lawsuit Challenges Tennessee's Racial Gerrymandering in Redistricting

A group of Tennessee voters, including former state Sen. Brenda Gilmore, has filed a lawsuit alleging that the state's newly drawn congressional maps intentionally discriminate against Black voters and dilute the voting power of communities of color. The lawsuit claims that the redistricting effort constitutes unconstitutional racial gerrymandering by dividing a Black, urban voting population in Davidson County into three largely rural, white districts. Civil rights groups, including the NAACP and the League of Women Voters, have joined the lawsuit. Republican lawmakers argue that the new maps are constitutional, while the plaintiffs are hopeful for a favorable decision based on recent rulings in similar cases.
